Nevolat is a prescription medication containing Nebivolol, a highly selective beta-1 receptor blocker. It is used to treat Essential Hypertension (high blood pressure) and Chronic Heart Failure in elderly patients.
Why Nevolat is Different:
Nevolat belongs to the “third generation” of beta-blockers. Unlike traditional beta-blockers that simply slow down the heart rate, Nevolat has a unique dual mechanism of action:
- Cardioselective Blockade: It slows the heart rate and reduces the force of the heart’s contraction, lowering blood pressure.
- Vasodilation: It stimulates the release of Nitric Oxide in the blood vessels. This relaxes and widens the arteries (vasodilation), improving blood flow and reducing peripheral resistance.
Result:
This dual action helps lower blood pressure effectively while often resulting in fewer common beta-blocker side effects, such as fatigue or cold extremities.
For Hypertension (High Blood Pressure):
- Starting Dose: The usual starting dose is 5 mg taken once daily.
- Titration: The effect typically becomes evident after 1–2 weeks. If necessary, your doctor may increase the dose to 10 mg once daily, but only after assessing your response to the medication.
- Elderly Patients (65+): Treatment usually begins with a lower dose of 2.5 mg daily.
For Chronic Heart Failure:
- Starting Dose: Treatment must be started at a very low dose of 1.25 mg once daily.
- Step-Up Schedule: The dose is doubled every 1–2 weeks based on patient tolerance: 1.25 mg → 2.5 mg → 5 mg → 10 mg (maximum maintenance dose).
- Observation: Patients should be monitored by a physician for 2 hours after the first dose and after every dose increase to check blood pressure and heart rate.
